Mentor Program
Fellow members,
The Mentoring Committee would like to extend it's thanks to all of you who took your time to mentor a new official last season. This year the mentoring program will continue with some modifications.
Last year the committee spent numerous hours matching up new members with mentors by region. As a result, the fruits of our labor was not highly successful. Unfortunately, several mentees, fell to the way side for a variety of reasons. Out of 89 new officials who agreed to be a mentee, only a fourth actually went through the program. It was not uncommon for us (the committee) to hear from you about mentees whom were unable to be reached. To avoid this from occurring again, the mentoring program has changed. This season the new officials who are serious about being mentees will go to the mentoring link on our Houstonreferee.com website. There they will find a list of available mentors within their region. They will then take the initiative to contact a mentor.
Attached is the list of members who agreed to be mentors last season. Please review the list and let us know if you wish to continue to be a mentor. If you are not on the list and are interested in being a mentor, please email the committee back and we will add you to the list for the upcoming 2011 season.
Our goal as a committee is to have the list up on the website prior to the season beginning. Therefore, we ask you let us know, via email, if you wish to be a mentor in the upcoming season. If we do not hear from you we will assume you wish to longer participate as a mentor.
In addition, the mentoring committee will be providing 2 training sessions for new officials on August 22 (general meeting) and August 29 (regional meeting). The goal is to prepare the officials with the knowledge and insight they need before the season begins. The training will include mechanics, how to handle a coach, how to get paid, wearing a proper uniform, etc..
Lastly, our goal is to provide some form of an evaluation program for division 3's and 4's. Here we would go out and evaluate the official preferably at a JV game. The evaluation would be similar to how crew members are evaluated now. The evaluation then would go into a date base that would be made available to white hats in the event they are looking to add an official to their crew as either a 6 man or as an official. This is something we as a committee will seek additional insight from those who evaluate crews prior to this training tool be launched. The purpose of evaluation process would be used to provide the official evaluated insight and a bench mark as to where they are and what they can do to improve themselves for the next level..
Again, please review the attached mentor list from last season and let us know if you wish to continue to be a mentor.
Sincerely,
The Mentoring Committee
